“Words of Radiance” Preview: Chapter Six

Words of RadianceIn just under a month, the next book in Brandon Sanderson’s epic fantasy series, The Stormlight Archive hits bookstores everywhere. Entitled The Stormlight Archive: Words of Radiance, the book is over 1,000 pages of what I assume will be wonderful new content that continues the fantastic story begun in The Way of Kings. The publisher has released several chapters of the book early, and I thought it would be interesting to read them and share my thoughts:

Chapter 6 is another Shallan and Jasnah chapter which serves to give us more detail about the spren, the Knights Radiant, and the other mysteries we are so keen to know more about. I think the best part about this chapter is how Shallan interacts with her new spren pal, Pattern. Given that Pattern can only speak in broken phrases and ominous tones, it is really entertaining to watch Shallan interact with him. They are basically polar opposites and he frustrates her to no end.

There is talk between Shallan and Jasnah about how much they still have to learn when it comes to learning about the Knights Radiant and their history. Much of this talk is surrounded around the existence and/or location of Urithiru, the lost city of the Radiants. My guess is that finding this city is going to be a pretty big deal either in this book or in books to come. I’m really hoping it’s hidden somewhere in the Shattered Plains.

Jasnah also tells Shallan about an order of the Radiants known as Lightweavers who had the ability to manipulate light in some fashion. No other details are given about the nature of this order, but it’s pretty apparent that Shallan at least, possibly Jasnah as well, are going to ultimately end up being some of the first new Lightweavers.
